Position – Seasonal Naturalist
Sarett Nature Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental education for schools and the community. Seasonal naturalists play an active part in achieving this goal by participating in all aspects of operating the Nature Center. Most of a naturalists’ time is spent teaching a variety of natural history programs but are also expected to help with other Nature Center duties.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or working toward a degree in biology or a related field
Good communication skills
Experience working with children
Some teaching experience (summer camp, schools, etc.)
Interest educating others about the natural world
Knowledge of ecology in southwest Michigan
Willingness to work with visitors of all ages
Ability to work in a fast-paced team setting
18 years or older by the time of start date
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leading groups of children on your own during field trips and summer camps both inside and outside on trails
Complete other assigned operational tasks before and after programs such as cleaning and room preparation
Identify and respond to camper behavioral issues
Report camper concerns to the education coordinator
Provide light interpretation to visitors to the nature center about our ambassador animals, trails, butterfly house, etc.
Since most teaching is done while hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, canoeing, or climbing dunes, naturalists need to be in good physical condition
Flexibility to help with other duties around the nature center such as animal care, trail maintenance, etc.
